ABOUT THE COMPANY

Lilliput Technologies aims to become a leading nanotechnology design platform to reduce agriculture’s environmental footprint and enhance farms’ resilience to climate change. We want to build an interdisciplinary team to create a line of nanomaterial products that can protect crops and enhance their performance. Currently, heat stress is causing loss of yields and at Lilliput Technologies we can turn that harmful energy into fruits and seeds!

Lilliput Tech. was founded by Mauricio Herrera, PhD. (CEO) and Sam Nehme, PhD. (CTO). It is a spin out from Deep Science Ventures funded by the CRUSA Foundation.

ABOUT MAURICIO (CEO)

Mauricio has more than two decades of experience solving agricultural challenges (pesticide use, water management, land use change) in Latin America and the United States. He has worked with early-stage startups in Colombia and Costa Rica promoting innovative tech-based solutions and experimental business models involving organic and regenerative agriculture; green and grey climatic adaptation; risk-sharing and, demand-driven and value chain integration. Mauricio holds a PhD. in Geography from the University of Kansas.

ABOUT SAM (CTO)

Sam is a specialist in bionanotechnology with more than a decade of experience in the field. He has deep technical expertise in nanocomposites, photoactive smart materials, and sustainable biopolymer design. He has worked on broad-ranging projects including, nanomaterials for DNA capture, structurally-coloured nanomaterials, and nanomaterial-hydrogel composites for industrial wastewater photo-remediation. Additionally, Sam has experience co-founding a virtual communication software startup aimed at the science Ramp;D industry during the Covid-19 pandemic when conferencing was no longer possible. Sam holds a PhD. in Bio-nanotechnology from the University of Cambridge.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will join us as a first employee directly reporting to the company’s CTO and be responsible for developing and conducting nanomaterial synthesis, functionalization, and characterization protocols. Furthermore, the role involves synthesising and characterising a library of biocompatible organic linkers to be used for targeted nanoparticle delivery. Experience working with antibodies and/or protein markers used in targeted delivery of nanomaterials is highly desirable. Together we will build an Ramp;D pipeline that effectively transforms crop protection and agricultural input design leveraging innovative and environmentally friendly nanomaterials.

Requirements

WHO SHOULD APPLY

We’re looking for a candidate with deep technical expertise in organic synthesis and bottom-up scalable nanomaterial synthesis.

The ideal candidate should have proven experience in:

  • Hands on (multi-step) organic syntheses;
  • Synthesis and characterization of organic and inorganic nanomaterials;
  • Synthesis and characterization of bionanomaterials;
  • Surface modification of nanoparticles, including conjugation of biomolecules (e.g., antibodies, peptides);
  • Different conjugation strategies (e.g., click chemistry, EDC/NHS coupling and other techniques);
  • Common nanomaterial characterization techniques (e.g., TEM, UV-vis, Fluorescence microscopy, DLS, XPS, NMR, GC-MS, AFM, XRD, and HPLC);
  • Working with photoactive materials and their applications in solar energy conversion, sensing, and imaging;
  • The ability to troubleshoot synthetic challenges and develop new methodologies for alternative synthetic approaches;
  • Spectroscopic and chromatographic data interpretation.

Highly Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with biocompatible materials and their interactions with biological systems (MTT and MTS assays);
  • Experience with nanomaterials in agricultural technologies;
  • Basic understanding of plant biology and physiology relevant to targeted delivery;
  • Experience with protein and antibody purification and characterization techniques (e.g., SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, ELISA);
  • Familiarity with optimization techniques for maintaining bioactivity;
  • Familiarity with regulations and safety considerations for using nanomaterials in agricultural settings;
  • Proficiency in computational chemistry softwares for structure prediction and reaction optimization;
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
